Experience the elegance and intrigue of one of the ocean’s most captivating invertebrates. The Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), also known as the moon jelly, saucer jellyfish, or common jellyfish, is widely distributed and naturally occurs in coastal waters throughout the world’s oceans. This broad natural range allows the species to tolerate a variety of water conditions, provided changes are gradual and stable. Although nearly translucent, the Moon Jellyfish is a striking animal, admired for its soft appearance and graceful, rhythmic pulsing. Its transparent body also lends itself to dramatic visual effects, particularly when displayed under colour-changing LED lighting.
Due to their delicate structure and slow, drifting movement, Moon Jellyfish must be housed in a marine aquarium dedicated exclusively to jellyfish. An ideal system is a specialised kreisel style aquarium with smooth, curved surfaces and gentle circular laminar flow that keeps the jellyfish suspended safely within the water column. Decorative elements are unnecessary and often harmful, as sharp or rough surfaces can easily damage the jellyfish’s fragile tissue. While Moon Jellyfish can tolerate warmer waters in the wild, they thrive best in cooler conditions; in home aquariums they are typically maintained at stable ambient room temperatures. In warmer climates or non–air-conditioned environments, the use of an aquarium chiller may be required.
Additional care considerations include the careful elimination of air bubbles, as trapped bubbles beneath the jellyfish’s bell can impair movement, feeding, and overall health. Like many invertebrates, Moon Jellyfish are extremely sensitive to copper and other contaminants, making water purity essential. Unlike photosynthetic species, they do not require specialised lighting for nutrition, but they do require regular feeding. Moon Jellyfish are active predators and should be offered frequent meals of appropriately sized foods such as baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) or high-quality, neutrally buoyant prepared foods designed for fry or filter-feeding invertebrates.
Moon Jellyfish are best kept in an aquarium with a Salinity of 30ppt
