The Spotted Jellyfish, also known as the Lagoon Jellyfish, is an ornamental jellyfish that makes a fantastic addition to the dedicated jellyfish aquarium. Though virtually translucent, the Spotted Jellyfish is a wonder to behold thanks to its playful polka-dot markings and hypnotic pulsating method of locomotion. In addition to giving the Spotted Jellyfish an ephemeral appearance, the translucent body lends itself to spectacular light effects especially colour-changing LED lights. The Spotted Jellyfish is an active swimmer sure to animate your jellyfish aquarium with fantastic movement. The Spotted Jellyfish grows to about 10cm in length but can grow up to 20cm or more. The life span of the Spotted Jellyfish will vary from individuals, but in the wild the typical lifespan is roughly 3 to 6 months. However, under proper captive care, the Spotted Jellyfish can live up to a year or more.
Because of its delicate body and slow-moving nature, the Spotted Jellyfish, should be housed in a marine aquarium dedicated to jellyfish. In fact, the ideal Spotted Jellyfish, setup should be a specialized "jellyfish aquarium" with curved or rounded corners. More importantly the water flow within the aquarium must have gentle circular laminar flow to keep the Spotted Jellyfish suspended in the water column. Décor is unnecessary and is often harmful or detrimental as any rough or sharp edges can damage the Spotted Jellyfish. Other special care requirements include the minimization of air bubbles as air bubbles can get trapped in the jellyfish "bell" and compromise its ability to move and feed properly, or even cause serious harm. Similar to other invertebrates, the Spotted Jellyfish, is extremely intolerant of copper levels.
Like many corals, the Spotted Jellyfish hosts photosynthetic zooxanthellae algae within its body. In this unique symbiotic relationship, the Spotted Jellyfish is able to satisfy a major portion of its dietary requirement. Therefore, it is essential to provide moderate to high full-spectrum lighting achieved by T-5 fluorescent or powerful LED light fixtures. To help ensure proper nutrition, it is also important to provide your Spotted Jellyfish regular offerings of small meaty items, including baby brine shrimp (artemia nauplii), or neutrally-buoyant prepared food items suitable for fish fry or filter-feeding invertebrates.
