Protein Skimmers
Protein skimmers are used mostly in saltwater aquariums to remove organic compounds from the water before they break down. This slows down the build-up of nitrogenous waste and phosphates, which can be harmful to the creatures in your tank.
A protein skimmer is a vital part of your fish tank equipment because it's the only method of aquarium filtration that can physically take away organic compounds before they begin to decompose. Having a protein skimmer installed in your tank will dramatically reduce the load on your filters and will enhance the redox potential of your water.

How do protein skimmers work?
In order to clear your water of organic matter, a protein skimmer will bring the water into contact with hundreds of microscopic air bubbles. Organic compounds found in your water are either hydrophobic or hydrophilic, so an interface between air and water is all that's needed to separate the proteins out (eg. using bubbles).
Protein skimmers are most effective in marine tanks, but you might also find protein skimmers in some freshwater systems.
